Dallas Man Allegedly Orchestrates Massive Bank Fraud, Obtains $40,000,000 From Texas Capital Bank, Happy State Bank and More

A Dallas businessman has been accused of using falsified financial records to obtain more than $40 million in loans, with prosecutors alleging the scheme defrauded banks and lenders of more than $20 million.

Garrett Douglas Johnson, 41, was charged August 19th after a federal grand jury returned a six-count indictment accusing him of five counts of bank fraud and one count of wire fraud.

Johnson maintained residences in Dallas, Texas, as well as Kingston and Edmond, Oklahoma, and allegedly presented himself as an owner, manager or partner of several businesses.

Prosecutors say Johnson operated a yearslong fraud scheme between 2018 and 2024 in which he sought loans using falsified financial statements, inflated revenue figures and fabricated trust-account balances.

In some cases, Johnson allegedly claimed that millions of dollars were being held in law firm trust accounts as collateral when those accounts did not exist. Prosecutors also allege that he failed to disclose existing debts while applying for additional financing.

Johnson allegedly secured more than $40 million in loans from FDIC-insured banks including Texas Capital Bank, Happy State Bank, American National Bank & Trust and Gateway First Bank.

According to the indictment, he used proceeds from newer loans to cover earlier obligations that had allegedly been obtained through the scheme. He also allegedly diverted some of the money toward unrelated business ventures and transferred more than $100,000 into a personal account to pay the IRS.

The indictment seeks forfeiture of property connected to the alleged offenses.

Johnson faces up to 30 years in federal prison for each bank fraud charge and up to 20 years for the wire fraud charge if convicted.
