Scott Bessent announced a larger than expected Treasury buyback of 5 to 6 billion dollars in long dated bonds, timed right before the 10 year and 30 year auctions with the 30 year yield sitting near its highest level in years.
The Treasury sidesteps the Fed entirely here because no FOMC vote is required, which is why some are calling it permissionless QE even though the Fed balance sheet never grows.
Whether 4 to 6 billion actually moves a trillion dollar bond market is the open question, but the narrative that the Treasury is intervening may matter more to risk assets than the mechanics do.
