Crude Oil Surges as U.S. Military Action Targets Iran Near Key Shipping Corridor

    Key Takeaways

    • American military forces targeted two Iranian rocket launching systems on Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend
    • Brent crude climbed 2.5% reaching $90.28 per barrel; WTI jumped 2.2% to hit $85.24 per barrel
    • Iranian forces launched a retaliatory missile strike against American positions in Jordan, with most projectiles successfully intercepted
    • Approximately 6 to 8 million barrels of oil per day continue flowing through the strait amid escalating tensions
    • President Trump unveiled initiatives to rebuild the Strategic Petroleum Reserve utilizing Venezuelan crude supplies

Energy markets experienced significant upward pressure early in the week following American military operations against Iranian military installations positioned near a globally significant maritime corridor.

American armed forces conducted precision strikes targeting two Iranian launching platforms situated on Larak Island over the weekend. This strategic location lies in proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for international petroleum shipments. The operation marked the first documented U.S. military action against Iranian targets since the end of July.

    🚨🇺🇸🇮🇷 BREAKING:

    U.S. official, speaking to Axios:

“Earlier today U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island.

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz.”

According to an American defense official, Iranian Revolutionary Guard personnel were actively preparing to deploy rockets loaded with maritime mines into the waterway prior to the military intervention.

    Commodity Trading Floors Respond Swiftly

During Monday’s Asian trading session, Brent crude futures for November settlement surged 2.5% to reach $90.28 per barrel. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate advanced 2.2% to settle at $85.24 per barrel.

This latest price action concluded a turbulent month for Brent crude, which oscillated within a nearly $17 per barrel trading band throughout August as regional hostilities persisted and diplomatic negotiations remained deadlocked.

Tehran mounted a counter-response to the Larak Island operation by directing missile attacks toward American military installations in Jordan. According to Fox News reporting based on U.S. military sources, air defense systems successfully neutralized virtually all incoming projectiles. No American personnel sustained injuries.

    Critical Waterway Transit Under Scrutiny

Energy market specialists at ING emphasized that the critical consideration moving forward involves whether additional military exchanges occur between the parties and if commercial shipping operators will reconsider passage through the contested waterway.

During the first half of August, Brent reached its highest settlement price since late July following mounting skepticism regarding advancement in U.S.-Iran diplomatic channels. Iranian officials had previously stated the strategic waterway would remain inaccessible unless American policy shifted substantially.

Notwithstanding the heightened military tensions, industry sources monitoring maritime cargo flows indicated that between 6 and 8 million barrels daily continued transiting through Hormuz. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news outlet confirmed that limited vessel movements were proceeding, with tankers remitting passage fees along designated corridors.

Regional oil producers had demonstrated increasing confidence utilizing the strait during recent weeks, with approximately 5 million barrels per day successfully navigating the maritime passage prior to Sunday’s military operations.

Industry observers highlighted that American responses have fallen short of market anticipations, with several analysts characterizing Washington’s pressure campaign against Tehran as insufficient to date.

Regarding supply dynamics, President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States would commence replenishing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve utilizing crude oil acquired through recently concluded arrangements with Venezuela.

Traders and analysts will maintain close surveillance for any subsequent military engagements and potential routing modifications by international shipping firms responding to the intensified conflict surrounding Hormuz.
