    Have you ever sent an email to someone in another Microsoft 365 tenant and immediately wished you could take it back? Well, now you can. With cross-tenant message recall, organizations can allow trusted Microsoft 365 tenants to recall messages sent to their users. In this article, you will learn how to enable cross-tenant message recall in Exchange Online.

    Connect to Exchange Online PowerShell

    First, Install the Exchange Online PowerShell module.

    Install-Module -Name ExchangeOnlineManagement -Force

    Once the module is installed, Connect to Exchange Online PowerShell.

    Connect-ExchangeOnline

    Check cross-tenant recall configuration

    Check the tenant’s current configuration to see whether cross-tenant message recall is enabled and which external tenants are allowed.

    Get-CrossTenantRecallConfiguration

    The output appears.

    CrossTenantRecallEnabled AllowedSenderTenantIds
    ------------------------ ----------------------
    False                    {}

    Enable cross-tenant message recall

    To enable the feature for your tenant, run the command below.

    Set-CrossTenantRecallConfiguration -CrossTenantRecallEnabled $true

    Note: The Cross-tenant message recall feature is disabled by default.

    You have now enabled the feature for your tenant. Next, specify which external tenants can recall messages.

    Add Microsoft 365 allowed sender tenant

    To allow a specific Microsoft 365 tenant to recall messages sent to users in your organization, add its tenant ID to the -AllowedSenderTenantIds parameter.

    Allow for a single tenant.

    Set-CrossTenantRecallConfiguration -AllowedSenderTenantIds @{Add="11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555"}

    Allow for multiple tenants.

    Set-CrossTenantRecallConfiguration -AllowedSenderTenantIds @{Add="11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555","66666666-7777-8888-9999-000000000000"}

    Remove Microsoft 365 allowed sender tenants

    To remove all allowed Microsoft 365 tenants, run the following command:

    Set-CrossTenantRecallConfiguration -AllowedSenderTenantIds @{Remove="11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555","66666666-7777-8888-9999-000000000000","11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555522555"}

    That’s it!

    Conclusion

    You learned how to enable cross-tenant message recall in Exchange Online. It’s a useful feature for many organizations. Instead of limiting message recall to users within the same tenant, administrators can now explicitly trust other Microsoft 365 tenants. Remember that some organizations may not want to enable this feature for compliance reasons.
