Hello guys, today we are going to discuss about how to migrate Exchange 2010 to 2016. It’s not a very lengthy process to achieve but it is the process which should be performed carefully.
I am considering that Active Directory and Exchange Server 2010 is already installed and configured very well and it is running right now in the user machine. I am also considering that Exchange 2016 is already installed in the organization, which is currently running Exchange 2010.
Solution for How to Migrate 2010 to 2016
After making sure that all the conditions, which I have mentioned in above paragraph, are true, we will proceed to the Migration Process from Exchange 2010 to Exchange Server 2016.
We have to move Arbitration Mailboxes from Exchange Server 2010 to 2016. Arbitration mailboxes are those mailboxes which are used to store audit logs, eDiscovery searches metadata & unified messaging data, custom greetings and dial plans. If we don’t move arbitration mailboxes then CMDLET of Exchange 2016 won’t be logged in and its eDiscovery searches won’t start.
Use Stepwise Solution to Migrate Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2016 Via Exchange Admin Center
So, let’s proceed to move arbitration Mailboxes from Exchange 2010 to 2016. We will discuss it in steps with pictorial representation.
- Firstly run Exchange Admin Center (EAC) and login Using Administrator User Account Credentials.

After Logging in into EAC click on Recipients tab present in left division. Then click on Migration option present at center of screen at right side of shared. You can see Fig 1 for reference.

Now click on Add (+) sign at the left side under Click to view the status. See Fig 2 for reference.

Choose Move to a different database option from the drop-down menu. You can see Fig 3 for reference.

Now a New Migration Batch window will open. Select radio button “Select the users that you want to move”. Now click on Add (+) sign button. You can see Fig 4 for reference.

Now Select Mailbox window will open. Here you will see All available Mailboxes listed. Select Mailboxes which you want to migrate and click on Add -> button and then click on OK button. See Fig 5 & 6 for reference.

Now you will come to New Migration Batch window again, where you can see listed mailboxes for migration. Just click on Next button to proceed. See Fig 7 for reference.

Now you will come to next window. Enter the name of the mailbox in New migration batch name textbox. See Fig 8 for reference.

Then select radio button Move the primary mailbox and archive mailbox if one exists”. See Fig 9 for reference.

Then click on Browse option for target database selection. Click on Next to proceed. See Fig 10 for reference of this step.

After selecting a database from list, click on Add -> button then click on OK button. You can see fig 11 for reference.

Now you will again come to previous window. Enter 10 in the Bad item limit box and click on Next button. See fig 12 for reference.

Now add recipient for reporting about migration completion or any issues related to migration process. You can add recipients by clicking on Browse button. After adding recipients just click on New button to proceed. See fig 13 for reference.

Now the migration process will start and you can see migration process status as displayed in fig 14.

After completion of Migration process from Exchange Server 2010 to 2016 you will be able to perform administrative tasks like: AdminAuditLog access, Export Admin Audit Log and Search multiple mailboxes.
