SpaceX SHOCKED NASA and China with 6 Starship methods to the Moon Sooner than Ever!
We all know that nasa’s current Artemis setup is so messy that even nasa administrator Mike Griffin called it “excessively complex” and “unrealistically priced.” That’s a pretty big statement, and it tells us one thing: it’s time for a simpler, smarter approach.
So in today’s Techmap episode, we’re breaking down six innovative ideas that could get America back to the moon faster. These are concepts we’ve gathered and summarized from different sources, so if you think something sounds off, let me know in the comments. Alright, let’s jump in.
First up, there’s one simple but powerful shift — moving to expendable starships. It means that you don’t need the second stage reuse to work, and the payoff is huge payload capacity.

On the tanker side, this approach lets each flight send more fuel to orbit because you don’t have to keep reserves for returning. That could cut the number of tanker missions by as much as 50 percent, which means fewer launches, less risk, and lower overall cost per kilogram of fuel delivered. You also save money on things like heat shields, landing gear, and recovery operations.
Most importantly, it removes one of the biggest risks for the artemis 3 timeline — proving that the second stage can safely be reused. If the FAA grounds flights after a failed re-entry test, that could cause huge delays. Expendable starships sidestep that completely, helping nasa hit its schedule faster.

And with SpaceX’s fast production rate, building enough version 3 starships isn’t really a problem anymore. The tradeoff is higher per-flight hardware costs since each ship is new, but the gains in payload and simplicity more than make up for it.
Think about it: a reusable starship might cost $20 to $90 million to build but spread across 10 to 100 flights, it ends up being just $0.2 to $5 million per launch. Meanwhile, an expendable version might cost $50 to $150 million each, but it could carry 250 to 300 tons instead of 100 to 150 tons for a reusable one. That math works perfectly for short-term missions like artemis, where speed and payload are everything. But when we start talking about long-term goals — mars colonization or expanding starlink — full reusability will still be the ultimate goal.
