XRP vs. Algorand: Who’s Leading The Quantum-Proof Stack?

Algorand went live with native Falcon-1024 accounts in August. XRPL validator Vet’s reply to that flex was blunt: quantum-secure wallets are one layer. Algorand is not fully quantum-ready either, because a lot of the network still runs on Ed25519.

That is the real argument. Not “who tweeted Q-Day first.” Who’s really hardening signatures, consensus and validators before a large quantum machine can turn today’s public keys into tomorrow’s stolen accounts.

Algorand Has Mainnet Ink. Consensus’s Still Hard

Algorand (ALGO) surely has a head start on deployment. State proofs have used Falcon since 2022. Native Falcon-1024 accounts passed in the v5.0.0 upgrade and went live around Aug. 20.

Early figures: about 1,800 quantum-resilient accounts and more than 1.2 million quantum-resilient transactions in the first weeks.

Those accounts sit beside classic Ed25519 ones. Falcon spending routines cost more (three minimum fees instead of one). The foundation’s own roadmap still points to 2027 for broader resilience, including post-quantum VRFs and consensus messaging.

Todd, the Algorand user in the thread, conceded the same thing: two components done, the hardest piece left.

So Algorand leads on live PQ account tooling. It has not flipped the whole stack.

XRPL Is Auditing The Plumbing, Not Just The Keys

Vet’s point is why Ripple is paying Project Eleven to look at validators, custody, networking and wallets — not only account signatures. Ripple’s published path is hybrid testing around 2027 and a full-readiness target of 2028. That is a contributor a.k.a roadmap date, not a ratified amendment on the official XRPL site yet.

XRPL’s most-practical edge is RegularKey: users can rotate signing keys without abandoning the address. If PQ signatures are bulky (ML-DSA / Dilithium is what Ripple has been benching), that rotation path matters more than a slogan.

Mainnet today is still secp256k1 and Ed25519. AlphaNet has been running ML-DSA. Production is not there.

Ethereum’s public chatter still sits around 2029. Nobody on this tape is finished.

What This Truly Means From a Broader Perspective

Quantum risk is a harvest-now, decrypt-later issue. An attacker can copy public keys today and wait. Shipping Falcon accounts reduces that window for people who actually migrate. Leaving the consensus on elliptic curves does not.

For ALGO, the story is first-mover accounts and early transaction count. For XRP, it is a wider audit and a later mainnet date, with key rotation already in the protocol. Collaboration would be the adult outcome.

A tribal “we’re quantum-proof” headline is not. Until consensus itself is post-quantum, both ledgers are mid-upgrade — one with more mainnet scars, one with a longer check-list.
