Google Maps has relabeled the smallest of the Great Lakes as Lake America for all users inside the U.S. after President Trump signed an executive order on the matter.
The shift occurred amid rising trade frictions with Canada that feature fresh U.S. tariffs on roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian imports.
Users in the United States now see Lake America while those in Canada still view Lake Ontario and everyone else encounters both names side by side.
Alphabet tells Fortune that the move stems from an update in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System and follows the company’s standard approach for disputed water names.
Apple Maps has kept the original label for American users and MapQuest has declined to adopt the new designation.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed the renaming while Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that no one will call it Lake America because it has been Lake Ontario for hundreds of years.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul also rejected the change for her state.
The action parallels Google’s prior update when the Gulf of Mexico received a new official title last year.
Trump signed the order on August 27th after trade talks collapsed and Canada announced 50% retaliatory tariffs set to begin September 8th.
